Why We Use Genuine BioThane®—And Won’t Settle for Less

Why We Use Genuine BioThane®—And Won’t Settle for Less

At Bolder K9, we build gear with purpose. Whether you're out training in the rain, exploring trails with your working dog, or just living your everyday chaos, your leash and collar shouldn't be the thing that fails you. That’s why we exclusively use genuine BioThane® Beta Series for every piece of gear we make.

Not all coated webbing is created equal.

There's a growing market of unbranded PVC- or TPU-coated webbing from overseas that looks like BioThane—but after working with the real thing and seeing how the knockoffs perform, we can tell you firsthand: there’s a big difference.

Let’s break down why BioThane isn’t just a brand name—it’s a better, safer, and more durable material.

What Is BioThane® Beta Series?

BioThane® is a U.S.-made coated webbing developed by the BioThane Coated Webbing Corporation in Ohio. The Beta Series—which we use exclusively—is known for its leather-like appearance and matte feel, making it a favorite among dog trainers, handlers, and working dog owners. It’s flexible, waterproof, stink-proof, and ridiculously strong, with a breaking strength of up to 1,000 lbs per inch of width.

This is the stuff that holds up to real-life wear—mud, snow, sun, sand, slobber, and everything in between.

PVC-Coated Webbing: What’s the Difference?

Many companies now offer PVC-coated webbing, often imported from overseas, and advertise it as “just like BioThane.” But there are serious differences when it comes to:

Durability
  • BioThane Beta resists cracking, tearing, stretching, and fraying over time—even in extreme conditions.

  • PVC webbing becomes brittle with UV exposure or cold weather, cracks over time, and is more prone to peeling or splitting.

Safety
  • BioThane is engineered with consistent quality control in a U.S. manufacturing facility.

  • Unbranded PVC-coated products often lack safety data, can vary widely in tensile strength, and may contain unknown additives or fillers.

For us, that’s a non-negotiable—we won’t risk your dog’s safety on unknowns.

Feel & Flexibility
  • Beta BioThane feels smooth, grippy, and flexible—even in cold weather.

  • PVC-coated webbing tends to feel sticky, overly glossy, stiff, or rubbery—and often gets worse with time.

Smell & Maintenance
  • BioThane is odor-proof—seriously. Rinse it and it's like new.

  • PVC products can absorb odors, degrade faster when dirty, and some even release a chemical smell after use.

Longevity
  • We've personally used some of our BioThane leashes for years with zero fraying, cracking, or compromise.

  • PVC leashes may look nice out of the box, but long-term use tells a different story—less lifespan, more risk.

Why It Matters

When you're handling a dog—especially a large, strong, or high-drive dog—you need to trust your gear. You shouldn't have to second guess the strength of your leash or wonder if it’ll hold up in the rain, heat, or snow.

Using genuine BioThane® means we’re delivering gear that’s:

  • Safe

  • Tested

  • Reliable

  • Comfortable

  • Long-lasting

We know exactly where our material comes from, how it’s made, and how it performs—because we use it with our own dogs, every day.

BioThane Over Everything

We’re not just using BioThane because it’s trendy. We use it because we’ve tested everything else—and this is what holds up. Our promise is simple: if we wouldn’t trust it on our own dogs, we won’t put it in your hands.

That’s why we choose BioThane®. Every leash. Every collar. Every time.
